If you like this musical realm of Esther Phillips, may I suggest getting the two-fer "Confessin the Blues / Burnin" also available on Amazon, which collects two Atlantic recordings onto one. "Burnin" extends the late-night jazz club feel found on half of the "Confessin" songs/5(9). Reply

The first seven numbers on Confessin' the Blues show off Esther Phillips doing sophisticated, big-band blues (backed by a small orchestra led by Onzy Matthews) and giving direct and pointed yet elegant performances of "Confessin' the Blues," "I'm Gettin' 'Long Alright," and "C. C. Rider."The last four numbers, which comprise nearly 24 minutes, have Phillips doing a jazzier set to start with 8/ Reply

The same clipped phrasing and soulful delivery is uncanny in its ability to evoke the also-great Dinah Washington, who unlike Esther Phillips, DID hit it big in her time. "Confessin the Blues" is a must for any jazz/blues fan. If you like Dinah Washington and good-to-honest pure jazz singing, this is for you/5(9). Reply

Bye Bye Blackbird goes back close to half a century but has gained new currency over the past decade among jazz and soul singers. Esther takes it out of tempo for a full chorus, with splendid use of syllable-splitting (or melisma, as the music teachers would call it). Reply
